ALICE SPRINGS - Australia:

May 1973- May 1977

Head Nurse ER & Out Patient Dept.
General Hospital, Alice Springs.

In those days, gatherings of aborigines lived in squalid shanties around the dry Todd River bed; struggling to come to terms with a rapidly changing world, on the fringes of white society, looking in, but not a part of it. Where did their rich tribal heritage fit in? I plan to return soon, to find out.

It wasn't all squalor and drinking, aboriginal men with horse breaking and stockmen skills were in great demand on cattle stations. Aboriginal artists flourished with watercolour capturing the outback beauty.

Gorges, canyons and rock pools; exotic birds, lizards and the dreaded King Brown snake, all make up the adventure that is the Red Centre. I became a rock hound, finding gem quality amethyst, ruby red garnets and zircon. I loved my time there.
